High Performance house in Squamish

High Creek House

Squamish

PROJECT TYPE: Residential
SIZE: 4,400 sq ft
COMPLETED: Under Construction

The steep, rocky site rises sharply from the road, yet offers elevated and panoramic views of the Squamish Chief. To meet the client’s brief, the design prioritizes privacy from the road while simultaneously focusing sightlines toward the mountains. As a result, this sustainable mountain modern home connects the living spaces directly to the rear of the property, where the owners can cultivate a vegetable garden and establish a sauna area.

The house sits on two axes — south-east and south — so that the living space projects outward with purpose. In doing so, it creates a focal point at the end of the volume and, additionally, opens the south-west side to views of the mountains and sea beyond. Meanwhile, the primary bedroom wing follows the south axis, with bedrooms oriented due south to capture the views. To bridge the two volumes, elevated decks on the upper floor and a walk-out patio below connect the spaces seamlessly.

The exterior draws on a refined palette of stained hemlock and cedar, paired with sleek silver metal profiles. Together, these materials strike a balance of warmth and durability. Furthermore, the natural wood finishes soften the building’s presence and let it settle into the landscape, while the metallic accents introduce a modern, architectural edge — hallmarks of any well-resolved sustainable mountain modern home.

In terms of performance, the team selected metal cladding for elevations most exposed to the elements, ensuring low-maintenance results over time. Consequently, this material strategy reflects a clear commitment to sustainable, high-performance design. Rather than competing, natural finishes and engineered cladding work in tandem, each doing exactly what the site demands.

Inside, the design embraces a simple yet inviting palette. Specifically, rich wood finishes bring warmth and texture throughout. In addition, modern and comfortable furnishings create an atmosphere of effortless elegance, and contemporary lighting adds depth and character to every room. At the heart of this sustainable mountain modern home, a sleek modern fireplace anchors the central living area — both a visual focal point and, equally, a practical source of supplemental heat during Squamish’s rainy winter weekends.

Ultimately, the combination of natural materials, refined detailing, and functional comfort delivers an integrated response to the client’s brief. In this way, the sustainable mountain modern home proves that thoughtful design and rugged mountain living are not in conflict — rather, they reinforce each other beautifully.
